The DEWALT DCF870B is a brushless 20V MAX XR 1/4-inch quiet hydraulic impact driver sold tool-only. Its central difference is a hydraulic impact mechanism and DEWALT’s noise-reduction claims. The practical question is whether a quieter fastening tool matters for your setting enough to justify buying into this bare-tool package.
What DEWALT says about noise
DEWALT describes the DCF870B as up to 57% quieter than the DCF787. The footnote specifies an RMS sound-pressure comparison with a 3-inch deck screw driven into pressure-treated 4×4 material, using the DCBP034 battery sold separately. That is a manufacturer-reported result under stated conditions, not a result we reproduced and not a promise of the same reduction with every screw, material, battery, room or operator.
A quieter tool does not automatically make hearing protection unnecessary. Work conditions, other noise sources and exposure duration still matter; follow safety guidance and the tool manual.
Published features and package
- Hydraulic impact mechanism: the model is designed for fastening with a 1/4-inch hex interface. It remains different from a drill/driver’s adjustable chuck.
- Brushless motor and 20V MAX platform: it can be relevant to people who already use compatible DEWALT batteries.
- Nine LEDs: DEWALT lists integrated work lights and a 20-minute work-light mode.
- Bare-tool contents: the official list includes the DCF870 driver and belt hook. Battery and charger are sold separately.
DEWALT also advertises faster-driving comparisons, but those claims depend on specific fasteners, materials, batteries and competitor models described in the footnotes. We do not treat them as independently verified rankings.
Where this product may fit
It may be worth comparing for cabinetry, framing or other repetitive fastening in a setting where reducing tool noise is valuable. The standard 1/4-inch impact format is designed for compatible hex driver bits. For accurate holes, round-shank bits and adjustable clutch control, a drill/driver is usually the more suitable tool type. For a broader explanation see our drill, hammer drill and impact driver guide.
If you are entering the DEWALT platform, add a compatible battery and charger to the purchase total. If you own a compatible pack, still check the exact battery recommendation and manual. Our Canadian tool-kit checklist helps compare the full cost.
Questions to check before buying
- Is the exact item DCF870B tool-only or a retailer-created bundle?
- Does the claimed sound comparison matter for your application and resemble the stated test conditions?
- What battery and charger will you use, and what is the total weight with the pack?
- Have you checked the manual, Canadian warranty, seller and return policy?
Research-based view: The DCF870B’s distinctive proposition is its hydraulic mechanism and a carefully qualified manufacturer noise claim. It is not a tested guarantee of quieter work in every environment. The bare-tool price and battery requirements are important parts of the buying decision.
